Traditional Braces
Traditional fixed orthodontic treatment, commonly known as braces, consists of the application of small metal (stainless steel) brackets to the teeth. These brackets are attached to an archwire, which helps shape the teeth. Often, springs and rubber bands are also used to help move the teeth. The rubber bands come in a range of colours, so many patients enjoy having different colours placed on their brackets as a means of personal expression and fun. Because it’s so simple to change the colours, feel free to swap them at every visit to the dentist.
Treatment usually takes from one to three years to complete. The amount of time depends on the cooperation of the patient and the difficulty of the case. Once treatment is over, it is essential to use a retainer for several years; however, in some cases, a small permanent retainer can be bonded to the teeth.
Invisalign
In the past, if you wanted to straighten your teeth, traditional fixed braces were the only option. But now there is an alternative – Invisalign, available here at Greystanes Dental. Invisalign aligners have been putting smiles on a lot of faces ever since it was first introduced!
